The Work
The foundation of our work is the Meisner Technique, an approach to acting developed by Sanford Meisner around the simple but profound idea of living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.
Through repetition, listening, improvisation, emotional preparation, scene work, and moment-to-moment connection, the work trains artists to become more present, responsive, instinctive, and truthful.
The goal is freedom.
Freedom from self-consciousness.
Freedom from the need to be perfect.
Freedom from the voice in your head telling you what you should be doing.
Freedom to listen.
Freedom to respond.
Freedom to play.
Freedom to feel.
Freedom to take a risk and discover something you couldn't have planned.
And ultimately, freedom to develop your own artistic voice.
With good technique.

Think of it as a Creative Gym.
How do we become strong and healthy and discover what our bodies can do athletically? We go to the gym. We work with a trainer, with a coach.
The same is true for our art. We become strong and healthy and develop what we can truly be creatively by showing up, doing the work, taking risks, failing, trying again, and discovering something new.
At Duncan Murray Studios, we believe creativity is a practice.
That's why classes meet twice a week for three hours. And because growth requires doing, not just watching, every person is guaranteed to work twice in every class.
There is no hiding in the back of the room.
There is no waiting weeks for your turn.
You come in, you work, you play, you listen, you respond, you take risks — and you grow.

A Platform to Showcase Your Own Work
At DMS, we believe that magic happens when you dedicate yourself to the craft, put the work in, and allow your internal artistic voice to listen, respond, grow and express how you see the world around you.
When you start developing new work, you need a safe, collaborative environment to bring it to life—which is why we provide a dedicated platform to showcase your creations outside of the classroom.
For actors, this means a hands-on chance to step into the spotlight or behind the scenes to direct or produce full-length plays. For writers, it is a sacred space to birth original scripts or poetry. Musicians are given the stage for intimate concert opportunities, and visual artists are celebrated with their own gallery shows.
This is more than a training ground; it is a living, breathing creative community where your independent work is nurtured, realized, and shared.

Heal Your Creative Soul
Many artists know what it feels like to become disconnected from the thing that once made creating feel joyful. Many actors and artists believe you have to either be starving or depressed to find the place art comes from.
Maybe somewhere along the way, creativity became about approval, comparison, competition, rejection, productivity, or proving yourself.
Maybe you became afraid to fail.
Maybe you stopped playing.
Maybe you simply forgot why you started making art in the first place.
Duncan Murray Studios is a place to begin finding your way back.
We believe that artistic development isn't only about becoming more skilled. It's also about becoming more alive, connected, courageous, and fully yourself. A healthy artist makes better art.
This is a place to nurture the part of you that wants to create.
A place to heal your creative soul.

Find Your Artistic Tribe
Making art can be lonely.
It doesn't have to be.
One of the most important things we build at Duncan Murray Studios is community — a room filled with people who understand what it means to make something from nothing, to risk being seen, to struggle with the work, and to keep showing up anyway.
Artists from different disciplines bring different ways of seeing, listening, moving, imagining, and creating.
That diversity makes the room stronger.
Over time, something beautiful can happen: the people you practice with become the people who challenge you, encourage you, inspire you, celebrate you, and understand you.
You find your people.
You find your artistic tribe.
And perhaps, eventually, you find a place that feels like home.
